With swimming in the rearview mirror, gymnastics, track and field and the late stages of several team sports -- including 5x5 basketball and soccer -- are taking center stage as the Games enter their second week.

Tuesday saw more success in track and field for the Americans, with Annette Echinunwoke getting things started with her top throw of 75.48 meters, which was good enough for a silver medal in women's hammer throw. She became the first American woman ever to reach the podium in this event.

In the men's 1500m final, Cole Hocker surprised Great Britain's Josh Kerr while sneaking in from the inside and taking gold with an Olympic record time of 3:27.65. Meanwhile, Yared Nuguse joined him on the podium with a bronze medal after registering a personal best of 3:27.80.

Gabby Thomas and Brittany Brown also represented the United States well with a gold and bronze medal, respectively, in the women's 200m race. Thomas' time of 21.83 seconds helped her become the first American woman to win gold in the 200m in 12 years.

Combat sports were also good for Team USA. Amit Elor won gold in women's 68-kilogram freestyle final, while Omari Jones got bronze in boxing in the welterweight division.

All of those Team USA results and much more -- including a recap of Team USA men's 5x5 basketball dominant win over Brazil -- are available below.

The United States continues to lead the Paris Olympics with 86 total medals, and has surpassed China with 24 gold medals. China is second overall with 58 total medals, while the host country of France has 48 so far.

The Olympics run until Aug. 11, and on this page, CBS Sports will be tracking the entire event from the perspective of the United States. You will find everything you need to know about Team USA's performances from gold-medal victories and record-breaking efforts to fun moments and (unfortunately some) crushing defeats.

Check out the key links below for everything you need to know about the Olympics, while the live updates further down the page will chronicle every important moment and medal opportunity from Team USA over the course of these games.

Men's Basketball: Durant hits Olympic scoring milestone

Kevin Durant won gold for Team USA in 2012, 2016 and 2021, and now, he is two wins away from his fourth Olympic gold medal. If Team USA finishes the job, Durant will become the first male Olympian to earn four gold medals in basketball.

Fittingly, he is now also the leading scorer (489 career points) in Team USA Olympic history. Watch the dunk against Brazil that put him atop the list of American all-time leading scorers -- both men's and women's.

Women's Beach Volleyball: United States' Sara Hughes, Kelly Cheng fall to Switzerland in quarterfinals

The United States' beach volleyball duo of Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng saw their Olympics run come to an end Tuesday, falling 2-0 (21-18, 21-19) to Tanja Hueberli and Nina Brunner of Switzerland. The Swiss duo had an advantage on the serve, and Brunner was absolutely everywhere defensively.

With Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss falling in the Round of 16, these Olympics will be the first time since 2000 that U.S. women's beach volleyball fails to medal.

🥉Men's Boxing: Omari Jones bows out in semifinal, earns bronze medal

Omari Jones' impressive Olympic run came to an end on Tuesday when he lost to Uzbekistan's Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev in the welterweight semifinals. Jones walks away from a deep run at 71 kilograms with a bronze medal. Jones put on a solid effort, taking two of the five official scorecards in coming up short by split decision. Jones' performance gives Team USA's boxing squad a medal in an otherwise underwhelming Olympics for the team. He was the only member of the four-member Team USA squad to earn a medal this year.

⚽ Women's Soccer: USA through, will battle for gold on Saturday

The United States women's national team played in another match that went to extra time, and just like against Japan in the quarterfinals, the Americans got a crucial goal to win 1-0, advancing to Saturday's gold medal game. The U.S. got the lone goal from Sophia Smith, who brilliantly finished a fine ball from Mallory Swanson. But it didn't end there as goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher was forced into an incredibly fortunate foot save in the dying moments to preserve the win. The U.S. will now take on either Brazil or Spain in the final, with all signs pointing to the former. Brazil is leading Spain 3-0 in the 70th minute of the other semifinal.

Twenty-year-old Amit Elor, the daughter of Israeli immigrants, became a gold medalist for the U.S. after completing a dominant Olympic run with a 3-0 defeat of Kyrgyzstan's Meerim Zhumanazarova in the women's freestyle final in the 68-kilogram weight class.

Elor won all four of her matches in Paris by a combined score of 31-2.

🥈 Track & Field: Annette Echinunwoke becomes first U.S. medalist in women's hammer throw

First-time Olympian Annette Echinunwoke became the first U.S. woman to medal in the hammer throw when she earned a silver in Tuesday's final. Echinunwoke, whose parents were born in Nigeria, planned to represent that country in the 2020 Games but she and nine of her would-be Olympic teammate were banned after a testing protocol error by the African Federation of Nigeria.

United States' Cole Hocker caught Great Britain's Josh Kerr by surprise right before reaching the finish line as he came from the inside and took gold with an Olympic record time of 3:27.65.

Kerr still took home silver with a time of 3:27.79. Meanwhile, USA's Yared Nuguse looked like he might miss the podium, but he overpowered Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen from the outside to get bronze while setting a new personal best of 3:27.80. Nuguse had qualified for the Tokyo Games three years ago, but was not able to participate due to an injury. He more than redeemed himself on Tuesday.

Women's Volleyball: United States dominates Poland to clinch spot in semifinals

The United States women's volleyball team continues to look for their second consecutive gold medal in the Summer Games. The Americans topped Poland 25-22, 25-14, 25-20 in straight sets to clinch their spot in the Olympic semifinals.

The United States came out of the gate strong as they scored 10 of the first 15 points. However, Poland did rally late in the opening set to get within two points, but the Americans ultimately took the first set 25-22. In the second set, the United States were firmly in control throughout the duration of the frame.

After the United States took the first two sets, they faced a little bit of adversity in the third set. Poland took a 7-1 lead out of the gate before the United States came back to tie the frame at 13-13. The Americans ended up outscoring Poland 12-7 to take the final set of the match.

Andrea Dews tallied 13 points in the match, while Avery Skinner and Kathyrn Plummer added 12 points apiece to pace the United States.

The United States won a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, while winning a bronze medal in 2016 and a silver medal in 2012. In fact, the team has medaled in each of the last four Summer Games. With the victory, the United States will now face top-seeded Brazil in the semifinals on Thursday.

🥇 Women's Surfing: Caroline Marks holds on for gold

Caroline Marks is a gold medalist, and the 22-year-old Florida native got it done by the narrowest of margins, beating Brazil's Tatiana Weston-Webb 10.50 to 10.33. Marks laid down a big run early -- a 7.50 on the 0-10 scale -- and augmented that with a 3.00 run later to give her some breathing room. Weston-Webb, who had a 5.83 wave on the board, went for one final run and, needing a 4.70, recorded a 4.50. The score wasn't announced until the timer had hit zeroes, so both surfers were left with a tense wait before Marks could start her celebration in full.

This takes the United States to 21 gold medals, tying China for the lead.

Men's Volleyball: U.S. beats Brazil in four-set quarterfinal thriller

Three years after a "heartbreaking" early exit in the Tokyo Olympics, the U.S. men's volleyball team found themselves in the quarterfinals against longtime rival Brazil and won, 3-1 (26-24, 28-30, 25-19, 25-19). The U.S. took the first set, 26-24, behind a 13-8 run. That was followed by an intense second set, where Brazil overcame a 21-16 deficit and tied the match with a 30-28 win. The U.S. took care of business in the remaining sets and will now face Poland in Wednesday's semifinals, Team USA's ninth semis in the Olympic Games. The men's volleyball team continues their quest for a fourth Olympic gold medal and first since 2008.

As a team, the United States converted 66 of their 129 kills (39.5%) and blocked eight of Brazil's attempts. Opposite hitter Matt Anderson led the U.S. with 17 kills and three blocks, while outside hitter Trey DeFalco was second with 15 spikes.

🥈Track & Field: Sam Kendricks earns silver medal in pole vault

United State's Sam Kendricks was off to a solid start on Monday as he cleared the first three heights without a single miss. He earned a silver medal after tying his season best of 5.95 meters. Making the podium was a redemption story for him. Kendricks earned a bronze medal during the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics, but then missed out on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19.

Sweden's Armand Duplantis defended his gold Olympic medal from Tokyo. The day truly belonged to him as he was already guaranteed gold but decided to go for a new world record -- despite him already owning it. In his third attempt, with Kendricks pumping up the crowd for him, Duplantis made history by clearing 6.25 meters. Greece's Emmanouil Karalis took bronze by clearing 5.90 meters.

🥉Women's Basketball 3x3: Team USA defeats Canada to win bronze medal

The United States started this Olympic journey with a 0-3 record, but the Americans improved their chemistry as the games went on and bounced back to earn a spot on the podium. They struggled with foul trouble earlier in the day when they lost to Spain in the semifinals, but they got the job done with a 16-13 win against Canada to earn bronze.

Defense was key as Canada had one of the top offenses in the field. The game was tied at 13 points each with 1:17 remaining, but Derica Hamby gave the Americans the lead from the free throw line and the United States did whatever it took to make sure Canada didn't score again.

Hailey Van Lith, who will be playing her last college basketball season with TCU, led the Americans' effort with six points.

But Budinger, who played for seven years in the NBA before retiring in 2017, is not entirely ruling out a return to beach volleyball with an eye toward the 2028 Olympics, which will be held in Los Angeles.

🥈🥉 Women's Gymnastics: Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles take silver, bronze in floor exercise finals

Simone Biles rode yet another redemptive arc at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Monday morning, bouncing back from a shocking fall and a missed podium on the balance beam and returning two hours later to capture silver in the meet-closing floor exercise finals.

The 27-year-old Texan flew high and smiled broadly on the way to scoring 14.133 on the floor, taking second place after her gold medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil's Rebeca Andrade took gold with a 14.166 and Biles' U.S. teammate Jordan Chiles earned bronze with a 13.700 after a scoring inquiry.

Biles qualified first ahead of Andrade and teammate Chiles, then performed Monday after a fall on a practice tumbling run ended with a limp and warranted additional training staff attention on an already-taped left calf.

She avoided any major issues with the calf but did step out of bounds with both feet twice, allowing Andrade, who'd performed second, to stay in first place. Biles began with a 6.9-point difficulty compared to her rival's 5.9, but Andrade made up the gap with an 8.266 execution score while Biles earned a 7.833 and lost six-tenths with the two fouls.

Women's Gymnastics: Biles falls, Americans miss podium in balance beam shocker

Simone Biles experienced a rare blip in her gymnastics career on Monday morning, falling off the balance beam during the apparatus finals and missing out on a chance for a third individual gold medal with one spotlight opportunity remaining at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Biles posted a 13.100 on the beam, placing her in in a fifth-place tie with U.S. teammate Suni Lee in a mistake-laden competition during which four of the eight athletes fell.

Biles had qualified second with a 14.733 on July 28, trailing only China's Yaqin Zhou and placing one spot ahead of Brazil's Rebeca Andrade.

Zhou led off the final, nearly fell and struggled to a 14.100 but managed to still earn a silver. Italy, which had never won any medals in the event, earned both gold and bronze with Alice D'Amato's 14.366 and Manila Esposito's 14.000.

Andrade was fourth with a 13.933.

It's the first time the U.S. has missed the podium in the event since 2000.
