Black★★Rock Shooter BEFORE DAWN (ブラック★★ロックシューター BEFORE DAWN, Burakku Rokku Shūtā BEFORE DAWN) is a series of side stories that serves as a prequel to Black★★Rock Shooter DAWN FALL. Written by Makoto Fukami and illustrated by Rui Tomono, BEFORE DAWN depicts the backstories and events leading up to the story of DAWN FALL, featuring characters who exclusively appear in the prequel.[1]

Synopsis[]
Set 30 years before the main story,[2] extreme inequalities in modern human society lead to the rise of a global terrorist organization Chivalrous Thieves Group. A girl named Camila spearheads the terrorists' chain of assassinations and widespread destruction, whose superhuman strength is engineered by the unethical scientist Georgius. Knowing the nature of Georgius's work before he was dismissed by the scientific community in the past, the genius scientist Luna Griffith convinces the world leaders to counter both Camila and the Chivalrous Thieves Group in her own way by creating their own superhuman soldiers and a major human redevelopment strategy called Project Elysion.

Development[]
Background settings for DAWN FALL were decided since the beginning of development, but as many backstories were set at different times and in different locations, screenwriter Makoto Fukami felt it was unsuitable to portray them in an anime format, so he incorporated them into a novel instead. BEFORE DAWN as a prequel would also serve to explain some of the technologies that play a role in DAWN FALL, specifically artificial intelligence and genetics.[19]
